Dem' Bones

Sunday, October 23, 2011
The boys decided they wanted to be skeletons this year. I figured it would be easy enough but let me tell you, these costumes were a serious labor of love. I decided I'd hand stitch each of the bones to give them more character and it took forever. The boys could care less about this detail but I think it was definitely worth it.

Why thank you, Erica!! They took forever but I'm stoked with how the costumes turned out and was thrilled that the boys were such willing models. Can't wait to see you all tomorrow night. :)

No way, Jose! ;) Finley is especially excited as he says that "William and Leo have never been to our house at night time." Ummmm....okay.

The hand stitching just made this costume, so gorgeous!

Thank you, Dandy! The hand stitching was so labor intensive but definitely worth it. It really transformed the little costumes.

Where did you find the skeleton pattern? SO cute.

Grace said...

Thank you, NamaS! I drew it myself. I did a google image search for an idea of what it should look like. Then I measured my little guys arms and legs and roughly sketched it out. It's definitely not accurate but that adds to the handmade goodness. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers!

Did you use felt for the bones? And what did you use to secure them onto the clothes? I'm thinking if I start now I can make this for next Halloween. It really is adorable.

I used eco-fi felt by Kunin (available at Joann's) - it's a great felt to use on kids' clothing since it's washable. To fuse the bones on, I used heat n bond fusible webbing. If you look at one of my applique tutorials, you can get a general idea of how I do it: http://www.finleyandoliver.com/2011/09/diy-appliqued-love-tee.html. Again, let me know if you have any other questions and I'll do my best to help. You can message me if it's easier - finleyandoliver@gmail.com. Good luck! :)
